“HOW CAN A FOUNTAIN CHANGE ITS SHAPE?”

This is the Kay Linton Memorial Ice Fountain outside the Loussac Library in Anchorage, Alaska.  And it changes it shape throughout the year. Note the steel frames with wires set at steep angles. During the summer, water washes the structure and it is just an ordinary fountain.  But during the winter, the water is turned on intermittently and the ice forms on the steel structure. The formation of the ice crystals depends on the weather that day. Over the course of a winter, the fountain changes its appearance every time the water is turned on.
