“You’re under arrest!”

One of the first female United States Deputy Marshals was Ada Carnutt.  One of her early arrests was in 1893 when she was just 24 years old. She was sent to Oklahoma City to arrest a notorious pair of outlaws, Reagan and Dolezal, who were wanted for forgery. When Carnutt arrived in Oklahoma City, she was informed they were in a saloon.  Not wanting to enter the saloon, Carnutt substituted brains for brawn. She sent a message into the saloon to Reagn and Dolezal that “a lady was waiting to have a word with them.” When the two men came out of the saloon, she place them under arrest. They thought it was a joke until she slapped cuffs on them. Then she took them by train to Guthrie, Oklahoma.
