Up, Up and Away

Next time you are sitting in an airport terminal and complaining about how tough travel is these days, remember this picture. Nome may be on the Bering Sea and seas are traditionally deep, but the waters around Nome are quite shallow.  Ships could not dock at Nome.  They had to stay well out to sea.  Cargo had to be lightered on small craft like that in the foreground.  Passengers were “air-lifted.”  Exciting? Well, not really.  This is a good day in Nome. Imagine being air-lifted on a day with a 30 knot wind and ocean spray drenching your clothes!
