“Do you know your cans?”

Never underestimate the drive to be informed or educated. In the days of the Wild West, particularly among cowboys, books – including the Bible – were few and far between. Most cowboys ‘read the cans.’ Seasoned cowhands would chant the words on the labels of cans in the chuckwagon after being given just the first word of the label. A man who could not recite the words after being given just the first word on the can was a tenderfoot because he did not “know his cans.”
