The only buffalo in the United States are in zoos.

Here we have bison.

That’s because buffalo is the shortened term

for water buffalo that are not indigenous to the United States.

The use of the term buffalo became popular from the song

Western Home, written by Brewster M. Higley in Kansas in 1876,

in which the first line was

“Give me a home where the buffalo roam.”

Bison are unique because, in a storm, they face the winds

because this reduces the amount of vulnerable body surface.
