READ YOUR HISTORY!

History is not the story of the past; it is the study of the future. If you want to know how far we have come, this advertisement was published in the 1950s and NO ONE objected.  A generation later, it’s a grim reminder of what ‘things used to be.’ The United States – regardless of who the President happens to be or how ineffectual the Congress of the moment – is a land where everything moves forward.  We are the land of inventors, creative thinkers and designers of innovative ideas.  Every megacorporation on the New York Stock Exchange started as a design on a napkin that moved into someone’s kitchen or garage. Every so-called minority and immigrant group is now mainstream. We lead the world in ‘making things happen’ in spite of the fact we have the historical memories for how bad things once were. Steve Levi is an Alaskan writer who specializes in the Alaska Gold Rush (nonfiction) and the ‘impossible crime,’ (fiction.)  An ‘impossible crime’ is one where the detective must figure out HOW the crime was committed before going after the perpetrators – like a Greyhound bus with bank robbers and hostages disappearing off the Golden Gate Bridge –THE MATTER OF THE VANISHING GREYHOUND.
