“It is not a rock!!  It’s a ship!!”

Yes, it is!

Because the British Navy was prohibited from ruling on land,

AND there came times when ‘land’

became an important naval ‘partner,’

thus was born the practice of the “stone frigate,”

a ship that was only a ship by political definition.

This one, Diamond Rock, off the coast of Martinique, was the first.

In 1803, so named

because the sun’s reflections off the side of the ship

evoked the image of a precious stone.
