Alaska bush pilot Archie Ferguson was famous for inventing “The Arctic Bump.” He convinced passengers flying from Nome to Kotzebue there “was no air” over the Arctic Circle. (Kotzebue is 35 miles north of the Circle.) Then, as he flew over the Arctic Circle, he cut the power to his plane and let it fall thousands of feet. It scared the living daylights out of the passenger! Today commercial jets flying over the Arctic Circle add a dollop of power to “bump” when they cross the Arctic Circle.
